4 Different Types of Rocks You Can Use in Your Landscaping

If you want to create a more natural look in your yard, a great way to achieve that is by using natural rock throughout your landscaping. Here are four different types of rocks that you can incorporate into your landscaping design.

#1 Boulders

If you want to make a big impact on your landscaping, boulders are the way to go. You don't need a lot of boulders to make a statement. Using boulders in your landscaping can give it a more natural feel, like you are in the forest.

You can put a boulder in the middle of a landscape setting where it is under a tree or surrounding by tall grasses, making it just seem the vegetation is just growing around this huge rock. Or you can use boulders more strategically as places to sit, perhaps around a fire pit.

Boulders are really heavy and generally require the use of small construction equipment or multiple individuals to move them around, so make sure that you know exactly where you want them to go before you have them delivered.

#2 Flagstone

A slightly smaller type of rock you can use in your landscaping is flagstone. Flagstone serves an entirely different purpose than boulders. Flagstone is a rock that is typically flat on both sides. Flagstone may not always be perfectly flat, but it is generally flat enough.

Flagstones are usually used to create paths or walkways. This rock can allow you to create more natural looking paths and walkways in your yard without having to pour concrete. You can allow grass to grow in between the flagstone on your path or you can fill the area around the stones with smaller rocks.

#3 River Rock

If you want to create a boarder around a garden or landscaping feature, river rock is a great type of stone to use. It comes in a variety of sizes. It is not as big as a boulder, but is still large enough to create defined natural boarders around your flowerbeds. It can also be used on the edge of your pathways to create a natural boarder as well.

# Pea Gravel

The final type of rocks that are usually found in landscaping is pea gravel. Pea gravel is really small. Sometimes pea gravel is often called Pete gravel as well as beach gravel. These are really small, smooth rocks that can come in a wide range of colors. The color options of pea gravel can allow you to really customize the look of your landscaping

Pea gravel is used to fill in areas. You can use it to fill in the space around a flower bed or around the trees in your yard. You can use it to fill in the spaces between your flagstone rock path. Just keep in mind that pea gravel can be easily washed away, so you need to make sure that is is boarded by larger rocks, mulch, or a landscaping boarder.
